Murshidabad already has the highest concentration of Muslims among the three Muslim majority districts of the State. Now, the District Magistrate Pervez Ahmed Siddiqui wants the district to be officially named as Muslimabad. According to a report published in the Dainik Statesman on 29th July, the DM in a letter to the concerned officials regarding the extension of the deadline for the correction of the electoral list, has referred to the district as Muslimabad except for the subject line. Surprisingly, all the concerned officials have countersigned the letter without any objection. Though the DM has been quick to dismiss it as an editing faux pas, is it that really a sign of frivolousness? If that be so then why the correct name has been used in the subject line? From 14th April Communal Riot started in Panchthupi village and surrounding area of the village under Burwan Police Station of Kandi sub division of Murshidabad district. This Panchthupi village is a very big village consisting of 18 paras (localities). The clash started when some Muslim boys spat on the Hindu devotees of Shiva on the day of Charak Puja. These devotees were drinking water from a tube well. The devotees protested resulting in clashes between two groups. Some people from both sides were injured. The administration intervened. With the initiative of the Officer in Charge of Barwan P.S. and District Magistrate a Peace Committee was formed taking representatives from both communities. Incident report 16th April, 2010. At the Barrackpur Sports Complex ground in Barrackpur town in Warless Gate Royal Park area, players (both male and female) were practicing, some Muslim boys (aged between 16 and 22), sitting beside the playing fields, started whistling and taunting on the female players of the club. This eve-teasing is a regular phenomenon there. Then the Muslim boys called a female player named Dona and pressed her to give her and her friends (all girls) mobile numbers. Dona was scared.
