Entire family arrested and driven out of home in Muslim majority village for opposing sexual harassment

Mrittika (name changed), student of Class XII at Khaiberia Vivekananda Vidyapith, and living in village: Mithapukur, P.O. Buita, P.S. Budge Budge District: 24 Paraganas (South) didn’t imagine ever that her lone protest against sexual harassments by Amirul Sheikh, embroiderer by profession (s/o Sheikh Haidar Ali – worker in a nearby manufacturing plant), would bring a disaster on her whole family. Amirul Shiekh, to be precise, was hell-bent to take hold of Mrittika at any cost and with this end in view, he used to proffer marriage proposals to the Hindu girl for all time. Mrittika, badly shaken, used to reject the offer at each time. On June 11, 2013, Amriul Sheikh went to the residence of Mrittika all alone to take her away. Family members of Mrittika, stunned at this audacious approach of his, asked people in the neighborhood to deal with the issue. Leaders of both communities assembled in the residence of Sukhendu Bikash Sardar (father of Mrittika) and made a truce. It is t...

Hindu Samhati’s Protest March in Bangaon

Image
To raise awareness regarding the recent developments in Bengal and how a venomous network of cross-border criminals is spreading  its tentacles to destroy the peace and tranquility of the state, the Bangaon unit of Hindu Samhati organized a massive rally on June 24, 2013 from Bangaon Town Hall at 5 pm. The procession was led by local Hindu Samhati activists and joined by enthusiastic locals desiring to voice their protests against the reign of terror. Gradually, the procession turned into a massive rally while it moved through Jessore Road, Batar More and then through the Bangaon Station Road. The spontaneity of the procession can be found from people who listened to the speech of Shri Ajit Adhikary patiently even though a thunderstorm was looming. Not a single person was found to leave the venue. Neither there was any objection when the Hindu Samhati procession blocked off Batar More for 15 minutes as a mark of protest to the worsening social and pol...

Rape attempts on housewives in Basirhat disgrace Bengal again

The attempted rape of two women at Kaijuri village under Swarupnagar P.S. of Bashirhat sub-division in North 24 Parganas district in the midnight of 19th June, 2013, by cross-border criminal elements has brought forth the vulnerability of women in the state once more. This incident flies in face of the massive outrage generated after the gang rape and gruesome murder of Ms Shipra Ghosh belonging to Kamduni village near Barasat. However, there is a difference in the attempted rape incident of Kaijuri; villagers are confident that assailants in this case are from other side of the border and the pathetic absence of even a semblence of an administration has turned the area into complete hell. And the helplessness of Border Security Force (BSF) who are under explicit orders not to use firearms has emboldend the criminals while the residents appear to have jumped from the proverbial frying pan into the fire.  It has come to knowledge that on June 19 at the dead of night,...

Minority community animated with onset of Panchayat Election

West Bengal State Election Commission, after lots of heated exchanges of words between it and State Government regarding Panchayat Election, has announced the date of Election finally. And the announcement of the same has infused a new stamina within the minority community of the state. The reason is not far to see – the minority community is well aware of the fact that their position will play a great role in the impending Panchayat election. This will be far reaching as well. While the political parties (cutting across political lines) will go on making lofty promises to them, their illegal activities will also not be heeded. To exploit this sudden development, the minority community is leaving no stone unturned.        An amount worth Rs. 10.5 lakh has already been sanctioned by the government to build up a graveyard at Dwarpara in Balagarh; Imams have demanded the state government for an honorarium of Rs. 10, 000 every month; efforts to make a mos...

Amta market confrontation ruled by communal overtone

A recent fracas at Kaltala More market in Amta, Howrah threw the administration out of gear for hours posing questions on the fast changing and precarious reality in the state. On 5th June, 2013, at   5 pm   in the local market a burqa-clad woman was caught red-handed while stealing litchis from a fruit stall that was owned by another woman. The development led to a wild altercation between the two, which finally snapped when the fruit seller slapped the female thief. Without losing time, the burqa-clad woman phoned her acquaintances and within the next 30 minutes no less than 100 hooligans belonging to the Muslim community reached the spot from surrounding areas like Khainan, Gazipur, Deora, Chanderpur and started a mayhem. From the onset they were trying to exploit the detached silence of the neighbourhood and this got apparent when hoodlums started raising slogans to avenge an apparent insult of a Muslim woman by raising communally charged slogans. When the situation was...

Their dreadful situation on June 4, 2013, at 1 am   when local thief Mohammed Bente Mandal, entered their residence stealthily.  According to Toofan and his relatives, Bente entered the house, made his way to the Puja room and even switch on the light, probably to note the actual position. Sensing danger Toofan and his brothers raised an alarm after which Mandal fled away for the time being. However, old habits die hard and Mandal was found to enter the Sardar residence once more after a gap of 2 hours. But this time the dog barked and he was eventually caught red-handed inviting fury of the residents. Toofan’s neighbors also joined the thrashing. Later on, parents of Mohammed were called in to show the reality of their son. But out of shame they refused to accept Bente and asked Toofan and his family members to do whatever they wished to...

Accordingly, they asked Commissioner of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police to adopt stern measures against all those ...

Shanties, governmental properties smashed to "avenge" tragic death

The tragic and accidental death of a Muslim woman quickly turned into a communally charged confrontation in Tikiapara, Howrah. The woman attempted to cross the railway tracks with her child when she was overrun by the Sheorafuli (down) commuter train around 7 pm on (May 27, 2013). The woman apparently survived the initial tragedy, even though her child survived. According to eye witnesses, the woman may have survived if prompt medical relief was provided to her by the Railway Protection Force or RPF who could have taken the victim to a nearby hospital. However, this did not happen and the victim succumbed to her injuries. What followed next was nothing but a mindless attack on the railway property, including adjacent shanties inhabited by Hindus. The communal overtone was obvious from the choice of their target. The angry mob went berserk, destroying four commuter trains of the South-Eastern railway route as well as a number of long distance, express trai...
